Desktop originally refers literally to the surface of a desk. The noun has been adopted as an adjective to distinguish among office appliances which can be fitted on top of a desk, as contrasts with a larger piece of equipment which covers its own area on the floor. Examples are:

    * A desktop photocopier, a smaller photocopier for individual use, compared with professional models.
    * A desktop computer, a personal computer that is designed to fit on a desktop.

The information technology term desktop may refer to:

    * Desktop computer, as distinguished from a notebook (laptop) computer
    * A specific style of computer case, also known as a "pizza box"
    * The area behind the windows in the desktop metaphor or computer user interfaces

If you are in IT professionally (coding or sysadmin) you will be staring at monospaced fonts for many many hours a day. So it's probably justified to spend 2 minutes picking a very good one. It can make your work (typing ; ) just a little bit more pleasing.

Following Alan Pope and Christer Edwards, I too felt the need to log everything I that I setup right after an Ubuntu Desktop install. It ranges from customizing the user interface to setting up a programmers IDE. It's mainly for future reference by myself, but may bring you on a couple of ideas as well.
