PHP to Javascript Project: php.js

php.js This article is part of the 'Porting PHP to Javascript' Project, which aims to decrease the gap between developing for PHP & Javascript.

A lot of people are familiar with PHP's functions, and though Javascript functions are often quite similar, some functions may be missing or addressed differently. The Javascript implementations should be as compliant with the PHP versions as possible, a good indication is that the PHP function manual could also apply to the Javascript version.

Porting crucial PHP functions to Javascript can be fun & useful. Currently some PHP functions have been added, but readers are encouraged to contribute and improve functions by adding comments. Eventually the goal is to save all the functions in one php.js file and make it publicly available for your coding pleasure.

If you choose to contribute, let me know how you want to be credited in the function's comments. You may also want to subscribe to RSS so you receive updates whenever new functions are posted.

PHP isset

Description

isset - Determine whether a variable is set

bool isset( mixed var [, mixed var [,...]] )

Determine whether a variable is set.

Parameters

Returns TRUE if var exists; FALSE otherwise.

Coming Project features

Project features that we are currently working on:

Done - Site. A place for php.js of it's own. See: phpjs.org.
Done - Compile. Compile your own php.js version, with only the functions you need. Should generate a hash with which you can retrieve latest versions of your php.js combination.

Done - Versioning. Individual functions are versioned, but the entire library should be versioned as well.

Function isset() does not work?
I've done follow test:

if (!isset(a)) { // a does'nt really exists
    alert('Var \'a\' is undefined');
} else {
    alert('Var \'a\' = "' + a + '"');
}

I get an Error from browser 'a is undefined'.
If I use isset('a') I get alwasy true ... ?

I've changed the function isset():

function isset() {
    var a = arguments;
    if (a.length > 0) {
        var i = 0;
        while (i !== a.length) {
            if (typeof(a[i]) === 'object') {
                if (typeof(a[i]) === 'undefined' || a[i] === null) {
                    return false;
                } else {

throws:
ReferenceError: a is not defined

2. should throw an error when no arguments are provided
3. should throw an error when passed arguments are not variables, like in both examples. They would give an error in PHP. Not sure if this is possible or needed by anyone.

Implementation for 1. and 2. :

function isset() {
    var a=arguments; var l=a.length; var i=0;
    if (l==0) { throw new Error('Empty isset'); }
    while (i!=l) {
        if (typeof(a[i])=='undefined' || a[i]===null) { return false; } else { i++; }
    }
    return true;
}

I made up an error message because I thought:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ')', expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or '$'

Would be pushing it ;)

The check for l==0 could be placed after the while to make it a littlebit more efficient in the case it would return false, but I think this is more readable.
